A City Inside by Tillie Walden

Shifting between the everyday and the surreal, A City Inside recounts one woman’s life from childhood home, to the first love that she will never forget, to the creation of the idea of herself that she can grow old with and the home that she can grow old in.

Walden’s follow up to the lyrical I Love This Part is a poetic exploration of the process of growing older; the journey towards finding out who you are and building a life for yourself.

It is a universal story of how we don’t just come-of-age once, but many times throughout our lives.

56 black and white pages with colour covers, 165mm x 210mm.

Artificial Flowers by Rachael Smith

Siobhan has left her hometown to try to start a career as an artist in trendy East London. Thanks to the financial support of her family she’s able to assume the lifestyle of a successful artist without having ever sold a painting.

She desperately needs an exhibition but no one seems particularly interested in her work. When her little brother Chris’s anti-social tendencies resurface, he’s sent by his parents to stay with her as part attempt at rehabilitation, part banishment.

Soon the two discover a way in which they can help each other; they just need to keep it a secret from their parents, Siobhan’s girlfriend and the London art scene…

In the first ever “Smithverse” crossover, fan favourites Chris (I Am Fire) and Siobhan (House Party) unite for a graphic novella about the frustrations and rewards that come from the ways that we choose to express ourselves.

88 full colour pages, 168mm x 239mm.

Tim Bird’s Grey Area Wins Best Comic at the British Comic Awards!!!

IMG_3095

We’re massively proud of Tim for his achievement in winning Best Comic of 2015 at the British Comic Awards for Grey Area: From the City to the Sea.

GA3

Tim was the first person to ever approach us about contributing to our anthology, Tiny Dancing, back when we had just started out, and Grey Area 1 was the first book we ever published that was entirely by a single creator.

The journey that took our creative relationship with Tim from there to here, in just a few years, is one of the things we’re proudest of in our history to date.

Congratulations Tim!

We’ll now hand over to the man himself as we print his acceptance speech in its entirety.

Firstly – thanks to you Adam and all the team at the British Comic Awards. Its a real honour to be selected for this award, and it genuinely means an awful lot to me. The work you’re doing in supporting British comics is hugely important, and I’m sure has contributed to the growth of the comics scene over the last few years. For me personally, seeing self-published, and small press comics being taken more seriously, and and being considered alongside well-established publishers has been a great inspiration.

I’d like to say a massive thank you to Avery Hill Publishing for all their support. They do an enormous amount of work behind the scenes – from help preparing pages for print to promoting and selling the comics at conventions. An extra special thanks to Dave, my editor from Avery Hill, who literally went the extra mile on From The City To The Sea, and walked with me form Upminster in London to Southend-On-Sea, which formed the basis of this comic.

A quick thanks to my wife, April, who puts up with me drawing in the evenings and at weekends when I should be spending time with the family. I’d like to share this award with you -you’ve helped make it possible – thank you!

Thanks again to the organisers and judges of this years awards. I hope events like this help raise the profile of comics in the media, and draw in new readers. Thanks!

As Craig grows bigger and bigger, the girls soon discover exactly what kind of creature has joined them on their adventure. Running away is not as easy as it seems.

Early Praise for The Rabbit

“The comedy that Smith does so well is still there, the dialogue as always just right, but there’s a menace and sense of simmering heartbreak here as well. Smith just gets better and better and better. This is her finest yet.”

Richard Bruton, FPI Blog

“A deliciously dark, endearingly whimsical and tenderly observed tale of childhood rites of passage.”

Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier

” I really felt like this was a bit of a new direction for her work and each work that she has released has really shown a growth in her craft so this is by far, the best one she has done yet and I can’t recommend it high enough.”

Pat Scattergood, The Curiosity of a Social Misfit

Reads #3 Out Now!

READS 3 cover flat offwhite 2

36 pages in US comic format, full colour

Reads #3.  4 stories, in 4 parts over 4 issues.  Now in full colour!

 Featuring:

Tim Bird, Luke J. Halsall, Ricky Miller, EdieOP and Owen D. Pomery

 Cover by Eleni Kalorkoti

I1 - Hitch 3-1

To kick things off, ‘Hitchcock & Film’, is brought to you by Ricky Miller and  Tim Bird.  They continue their look at four different periods in the life of Alfred Hitchcock along with a whistle-stop history of the development of film during his lifetime for good measure!  This instalment covers Hitchcock’s time as a director at the start of the age of ‘The Talkies!’.

My Friend Armi Page 1

Our second strip is from EdieOP whose graphic novel Maleficium was recently published by us!  You should totally check that out.  In ‘My Friend Armi’, she tells another tale of mild horror, this time of a  creature that maybe loves it’s owner a little too mucheven by Edie’s standards, this one is pretty twisted.

Bullpen Page 1

In our third strip, Luke J. Halsall and Tim Bird’s ‘The Bullpen’ continues.  A story set in the offices of a comic book publishing company at the dawn of the Silver Age of comics; similarities to certain publishing companies where the artists used to allegedly get regularly ripped off are ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL.

Or else it’s all done for purposes of satire, which I think makes it legal.

TMC_Page_1

Finally, we have Owen D. Pomery’s return to the characters from his hit comic, ‘The Megatherium Club’. Here is the third of his series of standalone adventures pitting the club against the same “villain”, a rival scientist who looks like he might just beat our “heroes” at their own game.
